Body art is big business these days, its popularity increasing massively, helped in no small way by the many celebrities who cover themselves in extensive designs, and amongst the most high profile of famous creations would have to be a David Beckham tattoo. The superstar England footballer has amassed some remarkable work all over his body, and continues to add ink on a regular basis.

As with many people who make the decision to decorate themselves, the initial Beckham tattoo, triggered a hunger for more. His first piece was prompted by the birth of his first child, when he had his son’s name written on his lower back, but this was quickly followed by some much larger and more extravagant tattoos, which displayed a side of him not previously conveyed.
Nearly every Beckham tattoo has been designed and carried out by Louis Malloy, a leading figure in the industry, based in Manchester, England – although the initial concepts and motivations all come from the player himself, as a form of self-expression. Possibly the most controversial Beckham tattoo is the ‘Guardian Angel’ that adorns his back, with arms outstretched across his shoulder blades. This was one of his very early pieces of needle work and caused quite a stir when it first had a public airing.
There certainly seems to be a great deal of thought that goes into the art, with quite a spiritual and religious theme strongly represented. He has the phrases Perfectio In Spiritu – meaning spiritual perfection, and Ut Amen Et Foveam – meaning so that I love and cherish, on each arm. However, the Beckham tattoo which caused the most fuss in the press, was the one he had created for his wife Victoria. This was a thoughtful, alternative interpretation of the name, written in Hindu; but unfortunately on close inspection, it was revealed that it had been misspelt and actually read Vihctoria! much to the amusement of the ever watchful media.
A new Beckham tattoo is always good for several pages in the national newspapers, and the recent birth of his daughter brought about the predictable addition to his skin of the little girl’s name – Harper. This of course, compliments his three boys names already scattered about his person. Whilst his arms are now almost full of ink, there still remains ample space in other areas; so don’t be surprised to read about, and see photographs of, another Beckham tattoo in the very near future.
